Maria Kulikovska is an artist, architect, actionist, and curator. She was born and grew up in the city of Kerch in Crimea (1988), whether she cannot return since the Russian takeover. In Kiev she graduated excellently in architecture, then MA, at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (2007-2013). In 2011 her design won a selection for the Shcherbenko Art Center in Kiev, which was built in that year. She worked briefly in China and Switzerland as an architect; but during that time turned towards art, with work in performance and sculpture that has been widely noticed. She exhibited twice at Saatchi Gallery, had a sculptural triptych bought by Deutsche Telekom, won a study award at the Royal Swedish Academy (2016), and recently a 2-month residency with Liverpool Biennial (September-October 2017).

The political reality in Ukraine led Maria to seek solidarity in Europe, where she met the Swedish artist Jacqueline Shabo, with whom she collaborated in a marriage-as-performance project “Body and Borders” (2013-2017). Her recent work includes numerous performances, actions, happenings, sculptural objects and video, such as 254 (performance in Hermitage, St. Petersburg, 2014), White (performance under Crimea Bridge, Moscow, 2015), #onvacation (performance, Venice Biennale, 2015), Happy Birthday (performance, Saatchi Gallery, 2016), War and Pea$e (performance, mined beach, Mariupol, 2016), and The Migrant Parliament of the Displaced: The Raft CrimeA (performance, happening, Kiev-Vilkovo 2016, Barcelona 2017, Liverpool 2017, Vienna spring 2018 and during Refugee Week, summer 2018 in London), and she has performed and exhibited internationally, in several European countries.

During 2012 she was invited to the solo project in Izolyatsia Art Center, Donetsk, where she created her most important and influential artworks, Homo Bulla. At the same year, she won an award “AKKU” from the department of culture of canton Zurich, Switzerland. She was the nominee for the Pinchuk Art Prize 2013, the same year she was selected for the Ukrainian-Swedish artistic exchange Ruta-Runa. Her sculpture projects Army of Clones (2010, a collection of Izolyatsia Art Center, Donetsk, Ukraine) and Homo Bulla (2012, a collection of Izolyatsia Art Center, Donetsk, Ukraine) were destroyed by occupying forces in Donetsk, following the annexation of Crimea in 2014. In spring 2014 she was exhibited as Kulikovska-Shabo Group in Bildmuseet in Umea, during culture capital. During Art Week of Warsaw (2016) her sculptural installation Homo Bulla were represented in National Museum of Sculpture Krolikarnia. Since 2015, she has founded the art collective and collaborative platform “Flowers of Democracy” (series of actions in Kiev, Dnipro, London, Kaunas) and co-established the School of Political Performance in Kiev, Ukraine (2016).

Her sculptural group of 7 sculptures “Memento Mori” bought by Ukrainian collectors for the public park near Lviv (Edem Resort, 2017). In autumn of 2017, her sculptural triptych and sculptural installation of 21 objects, was exhibited in the windows of most popular fashion store of Ukrainian design “Vsi Svoi” (All are Ours) located on the main street of the capital of Ukraine.

During Spring-Summer 2018 her new sculptural triptych were exhibited in Ludwig Museum (Budapest) in the group show “Permanent Revolution” of 40 Ukrainian artists, and from May to October, her soap triptych is installed in the park of Cidade da Cultura (Santiago de Compostela). In 17th May 2018 her performance and social sculpture “The Migrant Parliament of the Displaced: The Raft CrimeA” were installed in front of Oresund bridge, the city of Malmo, Sweden and later in the end of May “The Raft CrimeA” appeared in the city of Vienna.
